Scooter Rental in Mae Rim
Mae Rim is the district immediately north of Chiang Mai city, about 20 minutes up Route 107 (Chotana Road heading north). It's not a place most visitors stay — it's a day-trip destination, packed with the attractions that appear on every Chiang Mai tour brochure: elephant sanctuaries, the Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden, Mae Sa waterfall, tiger kingdoms, snake farms, zip lines, and the start of the famous Samoeng Loop, one of the best day rides in northern Thailand.
Renting a scooter to explore Mae Rim yourself is dramatically cheaper than booking group tours and gives you access to the quieter attractions the tour vans skip. The road from the city is simple — Chotana Road straight north, then right onto Route 1096 into the valley. Within 30 minutes of leaving the Old City you're in forest, past waterfalls, and deciding whether to ride the full Samoeng Loop (about 3-4 hours total, 100km) or just nip up to Mae Sa Valley and back.
The Samoeng Loop itself deserves its reputation. It's a well-paved, relatively forgiving mountain road with sweeping curves, jungle cover, a few waterfalls, coffee-plantation cafés, and the tiny town of Samoeng at the midpoint where you stop for lunch. Confidence on a scooter helps but it's doable on a Honda Click 125 or PCX at a moderate pace. Many riders call it the 'mini Mae Hong Son Loop' — a good test ride before committing to the full 600km mountain circuit.

Road Conditions in Mae Rim
Chotana Road / Route 107 to Mae Rim is a wide, fast, well-paved highway — straightforward riding. Route 1096 into the Mae Sa Valley and onwards to Samoeng is a winding two-lane mountain road in good condition but with steep switchbacks, sharp curves, and the occasional blind bend. Well-maintained and safe if ridden with care. Green season rain makes the switchbacks slippery; avoid the loop entirely in heavy rain. Burning season (Feb-April) reduces visibility on open stretches.
Parking in Mae Rim
Free motorbike parking at virtually every attraction in Mae Rim — it's all rural. Waterfalls, botanic gardens, and cafés have dedicated lots. The Samoeng Loop cafés all have free parking. Only the immediate Mae Rim town centre gets slightly busy.
Where to Get Fuel in Mae Rim
The PTT station in Mae Rim town on Chotana Road is the last major fuel stop before the loop. Shell and PT stations are also on the main road. On the Samoeng Loop itself, there's a small station in Samoeng town at the midpoint, but prices are higher. Fill up in the city or Mae Rim, not on the mountain.
Best Time to Visit Mae Rim
November to February is ideal — cool, dry, clear, and the mountain air is crisp. The loop is genuinely cold in early-morning December (bring a jacket). Avoid mid-February to mid-April for burning season — smoke obscures the mountain views that make the ride worthwhile. October is the sweet spot: green, quiet, and clear. Green season afternoon rain can cancel a loop ride, so start early and aim to be back in the city by 2pm.
Safety Tips for Mae Rim
Mae Rim day trips require slightly more riding confidence than staying in the city — the mountain roads, switchbacks, and faster traffic on Chotana Road add up. Use at least a 125cc, ideally a 150cc, especially for the Samoeng Loop. Never attempt the loop in heavy rain. Fuel up before the mountain section. Wear proper shoes and a jacket — even in dry weather the temperature drops noticeably on the upper sections. If this is your first mountain ride in Thailand, take a test run up Doi Suthep first.

Riding Tips for Mae Rim
Route 1096 (the Mae Sa valley road and Samoeng Loop) has sharp switchbacks — ride within your ability and don't overtake on blind bends.
The Samoeng Loop has coffee stops every 15-20 minutes so you can pace a whole-day ride easily.
Fill up in Mae Rim town before heading into the loop — mountain stations are rare and expensive.
Avoid the loop in heavy rain. The switchbacks become genuinely dangerous when wet.
For ethical elephant sanctuaries, research beforehand — not all operations advertised as 'sanctuaries' meet reasonable welfare standards.
