Scooter Rental in Hang Dong
Hang Dong is the growing suburban district south of Chiang Mai, straddling Route 108 (the road south toward Mae Hong Son and Doi Inthanon). Over the last decade it has become the area where expat families, retirees, and long-term residents buy homes — the streets are wider, the traffic lighter, and you can actually see the mountains without haze from everywhere. Day-to-day attractions include the famous Grand Canyon (a flooded quarry now popular for swimming, cliff jumping, and a water park), the Baan Tawai handicraft village, Royal Project shops, and countless cafés hidden down side roads.
A scooter is the best way to explore Hang Dong because everything is spread out. Route 108 is the main artery, but the interesting stuff is on the side roads east and west — rice-paddy coffee shops, teak furniture workshops, and the gateway to Doi Inthanon national park further south. Riding here is genuinely pleasant: less traffic than the city, smoother roads, and real countryside within 10 minutes of central Hang Dong.
Most visitors will stay in central Chiang Mai and day-trip to Hang Dong, but if you're looking at long-term rentals, Hang Dong is the quietest, airiest option near the city. It's 25-30 minutes from the Old City on a scooter via Route 108 or the quieter parallel back-road (Route 3035). Canal Road also runs south through the area and is the straight, fast option for anyone heading toward Doi Inthanon.
Highlights of Hang Dong

- ✓Baan Tawai handicraft village — Thailand's biggest wood-carving and furniture centre
- ✓Quieter, wider roads than central Chiang Mai — great for building confidence
- ✓Gateway to Doi Inthanon (Thailand's highest peak) — 90 minutes further south
- ✓Excellent rice-paddy café scene with mountain views
- ✓25-30 min to Old City / Nimman on Route 108 or parallel Route 3035
Road Conditions in Hang Dong
Route 108 is well-paved and wide, with trucks and minivans sharing the road. Route 3035 (the parallel back road) is narrower but quieter and in good condition. Side roads into the villages and farms vary — some are smooth, some have potholes. The climb up Doi Inthanon (Route 1009) is a well-maintained two-lane mountain road with steep switchbacks above the park entrance; safe if ridden slowly but genuinely cold near the top. Green season rain can make the Doi Inthanon switchbacks slippery.
Parking in Hang Dong
Hang Dong has plentiful free parking almost everywhere — it's suburban. The Grand Canyon attractions charge 20 THB motorbike entry which includes parking. Baan Tawai has free parking throughout. Cafés and restaurants have their own free lots. Only central Hang Dong town near the market gets remotely crowded.
Where to Get Fuel in Hang Dong
Multiple PTT and Shell stations on Route 108 through Hang Dong — you'll never be more than 5 minutes from one. Heading south toward Doi Inthanon, Chom Thong is the last major fuel stop before the mountain climb. Avoid roadside bottle sellers on the back roads.
Best Time to Visit Hang Dong
November to February is peak — cool, clear, and the Doi Inthanon climb is gorgeous. October is green and quiet. Avoid mid-February to mid-April for burning season; the open country south of the city can feel especially smoky. Green season (June-October) brings daily afternoon rain but mornings are usually fine for riding.
Safety Tips for Hang Dong
Hang Dong is one of the easier areas around Chiang Mai to ride — quieter roads, wider lanes, less urban chaos. Main risks are fast-moving trucks on Route 108 and blind bends on the back roads. If you attempt the Doi Inthanon climb, take the switchbacks slowly, never ride it in heavy rain, and use at least a 125cc if riding two-up. Always carry a jacket for the summit — the temperature drop catches people out.

Riding Tips for Hang Dong
Route 108 is fast and used by trucks — stay in the left lane and don't try to overtake on blind bends.
The parallel Route 3035 (back road) is much quieter and more scenic if you're not in a rush.
Doi Inthanon summit is genuinely cold — 5-10°C in December mornings. Bring a jacket and gloves; a 125cc can make the climb but expect it to be slow.
Fuel up before heading to Doi Inthanon — the last reliable station is in Chom Thong.
Burning season visibility on open roads south of the city is often worse than in the valley — plan Doi Inthanon rides outside March.
