Scooter Rental in Doi Suthep

Doi Suthep is the forested mountain on Chiang Mai's western edge — an unmissable ride for anyone spending more than a couple of days in the city. The iconic destination is Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, the golden temple visible from the city at night, perched at 1,073m above the valley. The road up is a well-paved two-lane mountain route with sweeping switchbacks, jungle cover, and panoramic viewpoints over Chiang Mai — and it's genuinely one of the best short mountain rides in Thailand.

The climb starts from the western end of the Old City — up Huay Kaew Road past Chiang Mai University and the zoo, then onto the mountain proper. From the Old City to the temple is about 30 minutes on a scooter if you're riding at a sensible pace. The ride passes Huay Kaew waterfall, a couple of roadside viewpoints, and Wat Pha Lat (a quiet forest temple halfway up that most tourists skip — it's worth the stop). Beyond Wat Phra That the road continues up to Bhubing Palace and then on to Doi Pui Hmong village, adding another 30-40 minutes of riding and taking you into proper cloud forest.

This is the ride every rental shop in Chiang Mai sells scooters for, and it's the ride you should do first when you pick up a bike. The road is safe if ridden with care, the gradient isn't extreme, and the reward — the view from Wat Phra That over the entire Chiang Mai valley — is one of the defining experiences of a northern Thailand trip.

Highlights of Doi Suthep

  • Wat Phra That Doi Suthep — the iconic golden temple at 1,073m with 360° views over Chiang Mai
  • Wat Pha Lat — quiet forest temple halfway up, rarely busy, beautiful light in the morning
  • Bhubing Palace — royal winter residence with formal gardens (open to the public when not in royal use)
  • Doi Pui Hmong hill-tribe village at the end of the road
  • Multiple viewpoints on the climb for Chiang Mai skyline photos
  • Huay Kaew waterfall at the base of the climb

Road Conditions in Doi Suthep

The climb is a well-paved two-lane mountain road with painted lane markings and guardrails on the outside of most switchbacks. Gradient is moderate — a 125cc handles it with two people, a 110cc will slow down. The surface is good except after heavy rain when leaves and runoff can make descents slippery. The road continues past Wat Phra That with narrower, steeper sections to Bhubing and Doi Pui. Cloud and mist are common in the mornings especially in green season (June-October). Burning season reduces the view dramatically but doesn't affect the ride itself.

Parking in Doi Suthep

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep has a large free motorbike parking area at the base of the Naga staircase. Wat Pha Lat on the way up has a small roadside parking pullout — use it, don't block the road. Bhubing Palace has paid parking at the main gate. Doi Pui village has parking at the entrance. All free unless otherwise noted.

Where to Get Fuel in Doi Suthep

There are no fuel stations on the Doi Suthep climb itself. The last station before the climb is on Huay Kaew Road just past the zoo turnoff. Fill up completely before starting the climb, especially if continuing beyond Wat Phra That to Bhubing and Doi Pui.

Best Time to Visit Doi Suthep

November to February — cool, clear, and you can actually see Chiang Mai from the top. December-January early mornings at the summit are cold (sometimes 8-10°C). Go early (before 9am) to beat the tour buses at Wat Phra That. Avoid mid-February to mid-April for burning season: the view disappears into smoke. Green season (June-October) is green and dramatic but afternoon rain can close the ride.

Safety Tips for Doi Suthep

Doi Suthep is one of the safer mountain rides in Thailand when conditions are dry and you ride with care. The risks are: overconfident descents (brake before the corner, not in it), rain-slick switchbacks, tour buses taking up the whole road on blind corners, and riders attempting it on underpowered scooters two-up. Stay in your lane, never cross the centreline on corners, and take it slow. If this is your first mountain ride, it's an excellent first one — but don't make it your first ever ride.

Riding Tips for Doi Suthep

Use at least a 125cc scooter. A 110cc Scoopy will make it but will struggle with two people on board.

Fill up in the city before the climb — there are no stations on the mountain itself.

Never ride the switchbacks in heavy rain. They get slippery and the descents are dangerous.

Dress code at Wat Phra That: shoulders and knees covered for both men and women. Carry a light sarong or long trousers.

Temple entry for foreigners is 50 THB. Park at the cable car base for 20 THB and either climb the Naga staircase (306 steps) or take the cable car.
